Let’s face it: we all knew it was gonna be weird.

As the war in Ukraine drags on for over half of 2022, a sort of fatigue for the “current thing” is setting in amongst those getting information from mainstream sources. From inflated numbers to dubious claims and the possibility of certain countries having to deal with potential shortages of heat and food, nobody really knows what to believe anymore- or whether or not they should care.

In many ways, Ukraine has become a stand-in child stuck between quarreling parents cruising towards a divorce- with the parents being ideologically antithetical aspects of Western culture, which seems to be spiraling towards its own doom.

With all this in mind, what can ease our fatigue and bring us together? Anime and memes, apparently.

The conflict in the Ukraine is in many ways Gen Z’s first major force-on-force engagement, and the closing swan song for the relevance of Millennials who previously fought in the Global War on Terror and its associated franchises.

Both of these generations grew up on anime, with the Japanese animation circuit becoming mainstream just over twenty years ago during the Cartoon Network Toonami lineup (If you need more explaining on what anime is, well- that’s like asking us not to spoil what happens in the first Star Wars. Tough break, you had plenty of time to learn).

Like with any hobby or passion- some people take something way too far. In the anime community, these people are called “Weaboos,” or “Weebs” for short.

As the conflict across former Soviet states rages on, the memes of the internet and culture of the individuals fighting have bled over to real life.

It seems in this war, there is no shortage of Weebs on either side, who like the same things.

We truly live in the strangest timeline. As one colleague of mine put it, “Reenacting in 50 years is gonna be lit.”
