Weapon of choice: Report says more than 90 countries use combat drones
Drones are now used by over ninety-five militaries around the world, according to a new report on UAVs- a telling tale concerning the use of unmanned vehicles in modern warfare.
The Drone Databook, released by the Bard College Center for the Study of the Drone, revealed that there are around 21,000 military drones around the world, a 58 percent boost in almost a decade.
“Drones are no longer the sole domain of technologically advanced militaries,” said Dan Gettinger, the author of the study. “Military drone programs around the world are maturing and diversifying as more and more countries are seeking an unmanned capability. This will have a significant effect on the future of armed conflict.”
During the research, it was revealed that over 260 units are tasked with drone operations in various militaries around the world and that over 170 types of drones are used.
