AC-130H retiring after 40 years of service
The below video, produced by the U.S. Air Force, shows the AC-130H Spectre gunship during its last combat deployment before retiring. The eight AC-130Hs—modified C-130 transports with special sensors and a battery of side-firing guns—entered service in the early 1970s and have fought all over the world in almost all American conflicts.
The 16th Special Operations Squadron at Cannon Air Force Base, New Mexico, is retiring the H-model gunships this year and getting brand-new AC-130J models with better sensors and weapons. If the new gunships matches the AC-130H’s longevity, they could be flying and fighting well into the 2050s.
