Watch a Syrian MiG Burst Into Flames
Deadly air war still rages over Syria
The below video, shot in Daraa in southwestern Syria, depicts a regime MiG-21 fighter apparently leaking fuel before bursting into flames.
It’s a useful reminder that there’s still a brutal air war raging over Syria, three years into that country’s bloody civil conflict. The aerial campaign has killed thousands of civilians and rebel fighters.
Syrian opposition forces fight back against marauding warplanes using heavy machine guns and shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles—resulting in the destruction of scores of regime aircraft.
It’s not clear if the aircraft sustained battle damage to its starboard wing … or if the leak resulted from a different cause.
Nor does the video show whether the pilot ejected. Most probably, he had to abandon the MiG-21, considering that a huge fire is clearly visible at the end—certainly dooming the plane.
