US President Donald Trump said that he will designate Mexican drug cartels as terrorists, claiming that they are to blame for 100,000 American deaths.

“They will be designated,” Trump said in an interview with Bill O’Reilly, first streamed on the former Fox News personality’s website on Tuesday. “Look we are losing 100,000 people a year to what is happening and what is coming through Mexico.”

Trump said he has been working on the designation for the past 90 days calling the process “not easy.”

“Mexico will never allow any action meaning a violation of its national sovereignty,” the Latin American country’s foreign minister, Marcelo Ebrard, said on Twitter.

“I have already informed the US of our position as well as our resolve to deal with transnational organized crime,” he added.

The Mexican government in a statement said that the country’s Foreign Ministry had been in touch with the US government to ask for the details of the measures mentioned by Trump in the interview.

There are currently no designated terrorist groups in Mexico and only one in Latin America, the National Liberation Army insurgent group in Colombia.

The US Foreign Terror Organization list includes Islamic State, al-Qaeda, and Boko Haram in Nigeria.

Earlier this month, six children and three women were killed in an attack on a Mormon family in northern Mexico by suspected members of a criminal gang.

Trump has said that stemming the flow of drugs along the US border with Mexico, along with immigrants, is among his main goals.
