U.S. Army Veteran Helps Kurds Who Fight Iran
Ryan O'Leary says he joined the rebels to help ... not to kill
The FBI and the State Department aren’t happy that U.S. Army veteran Ryan O’Leary has taken up arms with the Kurds in eastern Iraq in their resistance against Iran.
He originally went to Iraqi-Kurdistan to help Peshmerga units fighting Islamic State, and then volunteered with an armed faction within the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan. These rebels have fought a long, low-boil insurgency for greater autonomy within Kurdish regions inside Iran.
“I switched to join a group that’s helping fight against the Iranian regime for the Rojhelat, east Kurdistan area,” he said during an interview with War Is Boring’s Matt Cetti-Roberts. “I was the first Westerner they’ve let in since the party was founded like 70 years ago.”
The United States says he’ll be kidnapped. He says he’s there to help, not to kill.
