This Is What the World’s Bloodiest War Looks Like #4

A photo a day from the Syrian civil war

Thirty months. More than 100,000 dead. Millions displaced. The Syrian civil war is by far the bloodiest war in all the world today—and it could only get worse as the political, economic, humanitarian and sectarian crises it has spawned spill into neighboring countries.

In July Abdul Aziz was fleeing fighting between Syrian government troops and rebels in Baba Amr, a district of Homs. A shell exploded, killing Aziz’s father, brother and sister—and tearing off a chunk of his left leg. Evacuated across the Lebanese border, Aziz lives with his mother in a warehouse next to a restaurant in Tripoli and gets treatment courtesy of the rebels at a sympathetic, but rudimentary, hospital on the city’s outskirts.

As we photographed him in his hospital room, he told us he had just completed a grade in school and was coming home from buying his books for the next grade when the fighting forced his family out onto the streets … and to their deaths.

Aziz is 10 years old.
