Despite having a relatively small active duty force of only 140,304 personnel and being famous for neutrality, the nation of Switzerland is fairly militarized.

From F/A-18 Hornet multirole fighters in hillside bunkers that can use public roads as runways to a massive reserve/national guard-type component that even allows the purchase of one’s service rifle after completing one’s mandatory commitment, the Swiss are somewhat geared towards survival.

Even beyond the massive Swiss military-industrial complex that has outfitted militaries around the world, the mindset appears to begin in the Swiss home, which just so happens to have a reinforced bunker in it.

Interestingly, the Swiss are required by law to have a protective shelter area in their homes, according to swissinfo.ch.

“Every inhabitant must have a protected place that can be reached quickly from his place of residence” and “apartment block owners are required to construct and fit out shelters in all new dwellings”, reads articles 45 and 46 of the Swiss Federal Law on Civil Protection.

In 2006, there were about 300,000 shelters in various types of buildings.

The Swiss are the “bunker capital of the world” in this sense, and far outpace all others.

Building a shelter in a private house costs about SFr10,000 or just a few hundred dollars over nine grand. Those who wish to forego the shelter have to pay the local government a sort of fine. While such shelters can be used for storage, they have to be kept in working order.
