New firepower headed to the Pacific, USS Gabrielle Giffords sets sail for Thailand
A U.S. Navy Littoral Combat Ship has been equipped with a new strike missile deployed to the Pacific Ocean last week.
The USS Gabrielle Giffords departed from San Diego yesterday, hauling the Naval Strike Missile and the MQ-8C Fire Scout drone.
Utilizing the drones, the Giffords can destroy over-the-horizon targets up to 100 nautical miles away with the NSMs, giving them almost twice the range of the Navy’s Harpoon missile.
While the Giffords is currently one of the few Littoral Combat Ships with the NSM, all new LCSs will be equipped with the missile system as well.
“That’s a game-changer for LCS. They still have their mission. They still have their focused mission and all the things that they’re going to do in the surface warfare world,” said Rear Adm. Casey Moulton, “But now, every LCS that’s out there can’t be ignored.”
According to UPI, the Giffords is currently deploying to the Gulf of Thailand, where it will join the USS Montgomery.
