The missiles that were fired against US troops in Iraq had warheads weighing over 1,000 pounds- and Americans were taking shelter in bunkers rated for 60-pound warheads.
Major Alan Johnson, who was at Al Asad Airbase when the attack took place last January, described how it felt when the weapons impacted.
“Knocked the wind out of me followed by the most putrid tasting ammonia tasting dust that swept through the bunker coated your teeth,” he told CBS News. “The fire was just rolling over the bunkers, you know, like 70 feet in the air.”
Johnson, at the time, was concerned that he and his comrades would be immolated by a second hit.
“We [were] going to burn to death,” he recounted. “We start heading down 135 meters, make it about a third of the way there, the big voice we call it, clicks in, ‘Incoming, Incoming, Take Cover, Take Cover, Take Cover.’ I’ve got another football field to run. I don’t know when this next missile’s going to hit.”
“The only thing I can actually come up with is that hand of God protected us. Because, really, nobody should have lived through this,” he added.
The Iranian attack on Al Asad was response to then President Donald Trump’s special drone strike, one which killed Iran’s most powerful general, Quasem Soleimani.
Now, footage from the incident has been released and shows the moments many of the projectiles hit.
Miraculously, no Americans were killed.
