Marines train in newly built “world” that rivals Disney’s new Star Wars park
When US Marines want to train in realistic environments but can’t arrange a trip to the desert, they utilize a facility that would make Disney Imagineers envious.
Known as the Infantry Immersion Trainer (ITT) the facility is an indoor landscape that looks, sounds, smells and feels like the typical locations where American warfighters have been conducting operations for nearly two decades.
ITTs are some of the most realistic training environments available to the US military, and offer an incredible training environment for Marines who have yet to experience the “real thing.”
Developed at the request of then-Lt. General James Mattis, the ITT was designed to replicate the stressors and physiological responses faced by grunts in combat, thus building their stress-immune systems.
Two ITTs exist, with one in California and another in North Carolina, respectively.
