A diesel-electric attack submarine with the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force collided with a Chinese commercial vessel, knocking out communications and injuring three sailors.

The Soryu, the lead attack sub of her class, was patrolling the Pacific Ocean (near cape Ashizuri) in southwestern Japan Monday morning when it prepared to surface.

While surfacing, the Soryu noticed a Chinese commercial vessel through the periscope and attempted to evade, but to no avail.

The collision damaged the submarine’s ability to communicate, forcing the crew to notify their command via cell phone.

The commercial vessel oddly reported that they never heard a collision, and denied taking any damage.

According to Nikkei, reports with the Japanese Coast Guard have been filed and an investigation is underway.
