I Tripped Over Him Dying on the Street

A war photo a day #19

Eight years. Seven wars. More death and destruction than I care to recount. I’ve been covering armed conflict since 2005. Every battlefield has its stories … and its unforgettable images. Follow me through my career at war, one jarring, haunting or sublime photo a day until I run out.

Gunfired erupted one night outside my guesthouse in Abeche, eastern Chad. It was the 2008 and I was in Central Africa reporting on the side effects of the Darfur genocide in Sudan. The Chadian army had been chasing Sudanese rebels across the border zone. Now the fighting had come to me.

I ran outside in the darkness, ducking as men fired AK-47s, machine guns and rockets in all directions. Exactly who was fighting whom was never clear. I tripped over something. Shining my flashlight at my feet, I watched this man slowly die of a gunshot—until a burst of AK fire sent me running.
