A War is Boring recap

Japan has just launched the new helicopter carrier Izumo—Tokyo’s largest warship since World War II. The Japanese could, in theory, outfit the new ship with F-35B stealth fighters, but that would be a provocative move for an officially pacifist nation. Flattop or not, Japan is beefing up its military to counter Chinese moves in the Pacific.

Over in Russia, the government is getting ready to accept its first T-50 jet fighter from manufacturer Sukhoi. Along with the U.S. F-22 and F-35 and the Chinese J-20 and J-31, the T-50 is a so-called “fifth-generation” fighter able to avoid detection by radar.

Meanwhile the U.S. Navy has decided to continue testing its new X-47B jet-powered drone, which earlier this summer performed the first carrier launches and landings for an autonomous robot. The X-47B is smart enough to decide, all on its own, to abort a landing when it detects a problem.
