Deadly Duo: Viper helicopters share the sky with radar-jamming F-35Bs
One of the sexiest attack helicopters in the world has been paired with the smartest 5th-generation combat plane- and the match is a deadly duo made in heaven.
The AH-1Z Viper, the most modern variant of the AH-1 Cobra bloodline, has been paired up with F-35Bs in Marine Expeditionary Units, allowing the U.S. military’s most versatile force to perform air-based support roles with new lethality.
Utilizing the advanced systems on both the 1Z and 35B, the two aircraft are able to work together, with the information suites aboard the Lightnings allowing the Vipers to operate in contested environments with benefits such as radar jamming and battlefield management.
In addition to benefits provided by jet to a helicopter, the Viper’s advanced target sighting system is able to give an incredible 10-digit grid level of accuracy, allowing the F-35B to drop munitions even from well above cloud cover.
According to AIN Online, the AH-1Z fleet is relatively young by U.S. military standards (as the U.S. tends to build aircraft that often keep flying for up to four decades of more), and only entered service around the year 2000.
