The Chinese government has denied requests for two US Navy ships to visit Hong Kong, a US State Department official said Tuesday, as tensions escalated in the region.

The two ships are the USS Green Bay, a transport ship, and the USS Lake Erie, a cruiser. The dockings had been scheduled to take place in the coming weeks.

“We have a long track record of successful port visits to Hong Kong, and we expect them to continue,” an official said, referring further questions to Beijing.

Last year, the USS Wasp was denied the right to visit the port in Hong Kong, as trade tensions between China and the US ratcheted up. In 2016, a similar denial took place, amid competing claims in the South China Sea.

US President Donald Trump has rejected that he is involved in any way in the ongoing tensions in Hong Kong, and also said China was moving troops towards its border with the former British colony. He expressed hopes that no one would be hurt or injured.
