Cancel Your Weekend Plans: U.S. Senator Says World Is ‘Literally About to Blow Up’
S.C. Republican Lindsey Graham thinks the end is nigh
The world is “literally about to blow up,” according to South Carolina’s senior U.S. senator, Lindsey Graham.
The Republican war hawk’s dark prophecy came in response to Pres. Barack Obama’s State of the Union address on Jan. 28—specifically in reference to the commander-in-chief’s comments on Iran policy.
Obama said he would veto any legislation adding sanctions against Iran while Washington and Tehran are in talks over the latter’s nuclear program. Obama made similar remarks in an interview with David Remnick of The New Yorker.
Graham doesn’t agree with Obama’s position.
“The world is literally about to blow up and our president did not really paint a fair picture of the threats we face,” Graham said, according to media reports.
Roll Call, a Washington, D.C. newspaper that covers Capital Hill, has more from Graham:
Explain to me what happens if the Syrian conflict goes on another year and Assad continues to win. Iraq is disintegrating. The whole region is moving toward chaos, and we’re doing nothing. We’re talking about limiting drones?
I hope he will leave a residual force in Afghanistan [so] they can do the job, because if he doesn’t, it will fall apart at a faster pace than Iraq.
A spokesperson for Graham declined to clarify the senator’s view that the world might “literally blow up.” Graham as been known to use hyperbole and joke around, like the time he publicly called dibs on John McCain’s office if his colleague didn’t make it back alive from a trip to Syria.
Graham attended the State of the Union speech last night with Korie Robertson, star of the TV show Duck Dynasty.
