An Australian soldier and her husband have been arrested in Brisbane on charges of spying for Russia. This was announced by the federal police, who stated that the couple, of Russian origin, is accused of “obtaining material from the Australian Defense Forces” with the intention of passing it on to the Russian authorities.

The woman, Kira Korolev, 40 years old, works as a contractor for the Australian Army, while her husband has been identified as 62-year-old Igor Korolev.

If convicted, they risk up to 15 years in prison.

According to the Brisbane police, the woman allegedly secretly traveled to Russia while on leave from the army and from her home country, where she instructed her husband on “how to access her work account to reach specific information that she then sent directly to her personal account while in Russia”.

The intention, the police clarify, was to pass on “sensitive information from the Australian Defense Forces to the Russian authorities”.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was “extensively briefed” by security agencies, who nevertheless believe that there was no “significant compromise” of military secrets.
